I have a 68 Chevelle 327 4 speed and have been thinking about making it a street/strip car instead of the weekend cruiser. I want to keep the 327 but build it stout enough for having fun at the track. I am not an engine builder and would appreciate any advice or parts or 327 build recommendations you may have.
Thanks, Ken

11 to 1 compression, something in the line of a comp 282 cam and a set of dart 200 heads and a dual plane intake and a 750 Holley and you should still be able to drive it on the street but tear it up on the track too

Mike (sg3526) is spot on with that combo, only thing I would add is asking what fuel your planning on running? Do you want to be able to fill up at a station?? In my opinion our gas is junk, too many fillers.... Even 93 lacks in quality for a decent motor, but i know several guys who run it in thier motors without serious problems on the street.

Cam may be a little steep on the duration but it's a 4 speed car so you should be ok. I personally would lose the heads and get a newer set. For what it's going to cost you to make those heads reliable you can purchase a good set of aftermarket heads and be done with it.
You have to remember those heads were introduced in the late 50's early 60's and haven't been made since 66-67. I would put screw in studs in them just for durability and at least use a roller tip rocker. But like I said by the time you machine and do what you need to do to the heads you have you can buy a pair of Darts that will out flow and out perform those old dinosaur heads.
The 600 cfm carb will be good for low end power and torque but if you try to spin the motor at all it may act as more of a restrictor than a performance aid. Been running some of the best running small blocks for years and building them for my customers for what seems like forever. Don't shortcut yourself on any of this, it will only cost you more money in the long run.

I have several guys running 11 to 1 compression on the street and get by with 89 - 93 octane and will run 11's on the track on DOT's. So your 10.5 to 1 should be good. If your worried about it put a set of 72cc heads on it and drop it down to about 9.5 to 1
