There were plenty of places to race this year, all you had to do was just want to race instead of sitting home and wishing there was a place to race. Excuses about gas prices and traveling are just that, excuses! its only an excuse if your rich. if you have to take a day off of work for travel or just plain cant afford the fuel+hotel+entry+you gotta eat..that is a serious problem for a lot of people. it makes it tough to do what you want. with MAR opening it will shorten many peoples travel, which means less fuel and it is close enough that you wont need and extra day or a hotel room for the weekend.

www.adrl.us/2011/10/adrl-releases-2012-schedule-with-10-race-tour-at-nation%e2%80%99s-top-tracks/The eighth ADRL campaign will also feature returns to Gateway Motorsports Park in St. Louis, and Memphis International Raceway, both of which were previous popular stops for the ADRL. June will mark the first of two double-race months on the 2012 slate, as well as the return of racing at the ADRL’s home track, Gateway Motorsports Park in St. Louis. With a new ownership group in place, GMP will host the ADRL and the Gateway Drags IV on June 1-2. I't's good for GMP to get events like this. It could also be good for MAR. When there are big events at GMP the locals need somewhere to race.

In the past it was MAR that was good for Gateway. (racers) After MAR closed, Gateway began a steady decline of their local program. Fewer races, half-ass track prep, pro-rated payouts....... When MAR went away, Gateway kind of died with it.

It's true, bot tracks (all three when Pevley was open) complimented each other. You had racers that would only race at their "home track" except for certian big events, and others that changed it up all the time to keep variaty in racing.

No one is far enough away to need a hotel for a one day race. I bet I am further than most from a track. The closest track to me is 187 miles on way. I am far from rich as I am a teacher. However I have managed to go racing 21 straight weeks. Surely the people Todd is refering too could have squeezed in one week. MARP sounds nice to me 39 miles. Hell since MAR closed Gateway was the closest track at 120 miles and it seems close now.

Gateway Motorsports Park (formerly Gateway International Raceway) to re-open March 2012
Gateway as it looked last year. (Jeff Burk photo)
Agent 1320 had lunch Tuesday with Rod Wolter, who is heading up the re-opening and relaunch of the Gateway track near St. Louis, Mo, who informed us that the track has indeed been purchased (not leased) by developer Curtis Francois. Mr Walter told the Agent that former Brainard, Minn., track manager, Pat Johnson, has accepted an offer to manage the track.
Wolter also confirmed that the track, which is planned to be in weekly operation by March of next year, will get new paving from the concrete pad to 200 feet past the 1320 mark.
They have already scheduled an ADRL race and an NHRA national event for 2012. The new management will also update the timing equipment and other essential track equipment. The re-opening of the former Gateway International track and the building of an all-concrete quarter-mile west of Wentzville, Mo., means that once again the St. Louis area will have two operational drag strips. Why doesn't GMP put out a press realease, instead fo all the third party hearsay?
